Welcome!
"A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up children without surrounding them with books.... Children learn to read being in the presence of books."
Heinrich Mann (1871-1950)
Resources
I cannot stress enough the importance of reading to your child every night, regardless of whether he or she is reading on his own. Nightly reading to your child before bed fosters a love of reading through storytelling; your child will always associate the joy of a good book with the quality time together with you. The following are resources to help you get started:
- Trelease, Jim. The Read-Aloud Handbook. New York: Penguin Books, 1982. (The fourth edition was updated in 2002).
- Trelease, Jim. Hey! Listen to This: Stories to Read Aloud. New York: Penguin Books, 1992.
- Freeman, Judy. More Books Kids Will Sit Still For: A Read-Aloud Guide. Connecticut: Libraries Unlimited, 1995.
